Endeavour, a Bermuda-registered charity, has released its 2023 Impact Report, showcasing the success of its experiential education and youth development programmes that engage diverse youth across Bermuda in hands-on learning through sailing that builds self-confidence and life skills.
Endeavour’s programmes empower Bermuda’s youth to learn by doing as they explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math or STEAM education through sailing, discover Bermuda’s maritime history, inspire an appreciation for marine conservation and encourage maritime career exploration.
Since its founding in 2015, Endeavour has impacted 7,021 youth including 830 young people who benefited from Endeavour’s programmes between September 2022 and August 2023.
Endeavour is dedicated to delivering consistent results through evaluation and continuous improvement, and has engaged PricewaterhouseCoopers Advisory Limited to assist management in its assessment of the social impact of its programmes.
The 2023 impact report highlights that Endeavour’s work not only fosters academic growth but also nurtures essential life skills, with a focus on inclusivity and equal opportunity for youth from all backgrounds and abilities. The report is available in its entirety here.
Key findings from the 2023 report include:
Endeavour’s programmes include:
Patrina Cumbermack, Science Teacher at Sandys Secondary Middle School said: “Students had to do a lot of team-based activities. Students that didn’t have a relationship in class or didn’t really socialise within the classroom had to work within teams in Endeavour. That has been transferred to the classroom. They became more comfortable with each other and got to know one another on a different level.
Going to Endeavour differs from being in a standard classroom. Students are able to learn freely and more comfortably in an environment that isn’t so standardised. Students learn things that apply to real life. They can see how what they have learned applies to their everyday life. Students have fun learning and because of that they are engaged.”
Shanae Mallory, mother of Endeavour Graduate Shannon Smith shared: “I am very happy with how my son has increased his skills in the Endeavour Graduate Programme. He has enjoyed it more as he gets more involved. Endeavour gives children other avenues to explore a sport they might not have done otherwise. Endeavour’s programmes allow kids to get a different perspective on what is available out there for them.”
J’Kai Berkeley, 2023 Springboard Graduate, shared, “Every day I was able to improve my sailing, boat handling, and navigation skills. Being able to work on chart plotting, boat safety, and navigation prepared me for the course at the Chapman School of Seamanship. If you enjoy being on the ocean and you want to be involved in the maritime industry, the Endeavour Maritime Springboard Programme is the perfect start for your career.”
Endeavour’s school programmes are offered free of charge to students thanks to the generous support from donors such as lead founding partner Orbis Investments, along with support from Arch Capital Group Ltd., PwC Bermuda, BF&M Ltd., L&F Indemnity Limited, Centennial Bermuda Foundation, Oakley Capital Investments, Everen Group, Chubb Charitable Foundation – Bermuda, Butterfield, Butterfield & Vallis, PartnerRe and the XL Foundation.
